The advantage of going with a fretless bass is that it will produce a more unique sound. It is also used to produce the vibrato effect that you often hear in musical styles like Funk and Jazz. As a beginner, I would suggest you start out with a bass with frets.

Finally, the last thing to consider when purchasing a bass guitar is the price. Before setting foot in the store, you should set a budget in mind for how much you want to spend. As a beginner, you will probably want to take a look at the entry level models. You can pick one up that sounds quite nice for under $200. If you are still uncertain whether you want to make the full time commitment to playing the bass, try looking for a used model. A decent used guitar can be had for around $100. Try not to be tempted by the shiny, more expensive models as they are probably beyond your skill level at this point. You can always buy something more advanced when you get better.

Before buying your first bass guitar, make sure to consider each of the factors above before settling on the model you want to buy. As you look at the various
